COURSE OVERVIEW

This qualification prepares learners to work with sound from setup to final output. You will learn how audio behaves, how analogue and digital systems are connected, how to assess quality by ear and by measurement, and how to record, edit, mix, enhance, amplify and master sound for different production settings.

The programme also covers basic maintenance, fault-finding, copyright and business practice. Workplace experience is completed in either live events or recorded events, allowing learners to apply the same audio principles in a focused production environment.

  • Plan, connect, test and operate analogue and digital audio systems safely.
  • Record, edit, mix and complete audio in a digital audio workstation.
  • Assess sound quality and correct common faults and unwanted artefacts.
  • Carry out basic equipment maintenance and systematic fault-finding.
  • Prepare quotes, invoices and other documents for freelance sound work.
  • Apply copyright, teamwork and professional conduct in production settings.
COURSE STRUCTURE

Knowledge. Practice. Workplace experience.

Choose face-to-face study in Johannesburg or Pretoria, or complete the learning component online. The programme combines guided knowledge sessions, practical work and workplace experience.

Online study does not remove the practical, workplace or external-assessment requirements. Admissions will confirm where practical activities, workplace evidence and the EISA must be completed for your intake.

ASSESSMENT

How progress is assessed.

Assessment includes knowledge tests, practical production work, a project and verified workplace experience. Learners must provide a statement of results and statement of work experience before entering the external assessment.

The EISA includes a technology-enhanced theory assessment, a project and practical tasks at an approved assessment site. The Assessment Quality Partner is MICT SETA.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Any NQF Level 4 qualification is accepted as the minimum entry requirement. Recognition of Prior Learning may be considered in line with the QCTO RPL policy.

Applicants should be prepared for practical work with audio equipment, computer-based production and workplace experience in either live or recorded sound.
